The Transportation Commission has a number of duties and responsibilities under the Los Angeles Administrative Code authorized by the City Council: review of proposed ordinances regulating city streets (e.g. speed limits), oversight of off-street parking facilities, control of the Special Parking Revenue Fund, subject to City Council approval, regulation of vehicles for hire (e.g. ambulances) other than taxicabs and school crossing guards.

LADOT leads transportation planning, project delivery, and operations in the City of Los Angeles. LADOT is made up of over 1,300 civil servants, including 600 traffic officers. LADOT manages 52 different transportation services for the region – from parking management to safety improvements to permits for private mobility operators.
