Council passes legislation to guard against wage theft in year's final meeting
Happy Monday! I’ll be live-tweeting tonight’s Cleveland City Council meeting for #CLEdocumenters @cledocumenters
Check out tonight’s agenda here: https://cleveland.documenters.org/documents/agenda-83898/
06:02 PM Dec 5, 2022 CST

Loh, a Ward 7 resident and community activist, is speaking in support of participatory budgeting and its benefits for the council members. Following Loh, Ward 4 resident Shirley also speaks in support of participatory budgeting.

Although Shirley is there for participatory budgeting, she’s speaking more broadly about land bank policies, mental health responses, and more that could benefit from the new policy. Following her, another public commenter is at the mic in support of participatory budgeting. https://t.co/77MoZhB4s5

Ward 3 resident Ellen says that participatory budgeting “allows for Cleveland residents to have a direct say in how public money is spent in their communities.” She talks about the good outreach work that’s been done by PB Cle: https://www.pbcle.com/

Next, Thomas Fox of W3 talks about the need for better public space for arts & culture, particularly on the waterfront. “For this to happen, we don’t need a half decade & hundreds of millions of dollars to build new properties, we actually just need to cut a little red tape.”

Justin Strekal is speaking in support of worker protections against wage theft. He is taking his time to thank the many individuals and organizations that have supported the Guardians for Fair Work effort. That legislation is going through its 2nd reading tonight https://t.co/OuNaBw5Umh

Tonight is also a big night for the Issue 24 & Community Police Commission supporters: council is approving their nominees and the mayor’s nominees to the police commission. Council got 3 appointments: John Adams, Shandra Benito, Audrianna Rodriguez. Bibb appointed 10 others.

Kevin Conwell is presenting on the recognition of Cleveland State’s College of Law name change. He’s inviting CSU Law students in the audience up to recognize their hard work & advocacy. https://t.co/ggmkMZbOIk

Tonight’s passing leg also includes:
- a new “Strategic Priority Subfund” of $215 mil from the general fund for economic recovery, housing, public safety, arts, civic participation, & more.
- paid safe leave
- approving a consultant for the North Coast Lakefront Master Plan

If you’re interested in knowing about what kinds of grants the city is seeking/getting, purchases/sales of city land, general fund appropriations, contracts, & lots more, I encourage you to read through the agenda from tonight: https://cleveland.documenters.org/documents/agenda-83898/

Anyone know how to check out who that 1 no vote was for these?

Packed house at the council meeting tonight. Council members are recognizing constituents in the audience, many of which are there to celebrate important policy wins with wage theft, safe leave, community police commission, & more.
