The American Heart Association opposed a proposed cigar bar at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Chair Alisha Bell recommended anyone with concerns attend the Wayne County Airport Authority’s Board of Directors meeting on Feb. 19.
I will be live reporting the Wayne County Commission meeting today at 10am for #DetroitDocumenters
08:32 AM Feb 6, 2025 CST
The agenda for this meeting can be found here:
https://www.waynecounty.com/elected/commission/full-commission.aspx
I can see people fiddling with audio equipment, which suggests they’re going to start soon.
I’m still here folks. I’ll let you know when they begin
The meeting has begun and the invocation is being introduced. It will be given by Elder John Lindsey of Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church
An item honoring a local high school had to be postponed because it was a snow day today
A short presentation by A’Lynne Boles Dukes of the American Heart Association about the importance of heart health and the importance of learning CPR
In case you’re wondering, here’s an easy guide from the American Red Cross:

“Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure consisting of chest compressions often combined with artificial ventilation, or mouth to mouth…
in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.

The presentation ended with an appeal to block the opening of a new cigar bar, which would be pretty heart-unhealthy.
Do you still call them pews when they’re not in a church? They have them in the Guardian building and I wondered.
The Commission is still discussing the dangers of secondhand smoke.
They’ve moved on to a discussion of the rules. The Commission will adopt a revised set of rules. These are literally the rules of how the Commission operates. Most public bodies use Robert’s Rules of Order or , less often, Jefferson’s Manual.
They are now quickly moving through reports from commissions and voting to accept them en bloc. You can see descriptions of these reports on the agenda
On the broadcast, it’s just one camera quickly panning from person to person like 1980’s C-SPAN. It’s kind of nostalgic. Whoever’s on the camera is killing it, by the way.
They moved on to upcoming meeting announcements which you can also find on the agenda. That being done there is also no new business.
So the rest of the meeting will be special recognitions and the like. First up a resolution honoring Rose Dady for “her contributions to public service, her advocacy for energy Justice and her relentless efforts to uplift communities”
The recognitions being over, they moved on to memorial resolutions, with Commissioner Clark-Coleman so going out Charles Roy Scales, Jr.

Moving on to Commissioner announcements, a Commissioner added to the American Heart Association’s plea for heart health, and also praised the rules committee’s work, and threw a unnamed criticism at someone for their treatment of staff.
Bluesky seems to be having some trouble processing/displaying my posts. I’ll keep adding here and fix it later, if you’re watching live
Motion to adjourn passed unanimously. Meeting was adjourned at 11am on the dot.
