Note-taking by Sidni Goodman

People with concerns about toxic dust at the Kronos concrete mixing plant were told to email dust@detroitmi.gov or call 313-628-9994. And the council postponed a vote on about $12 million in rental inspection contracts to see if more Detroit-based companies could get the work.

As per usual, this full session of council is held downtown in 13th floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (CAYMC). You can get info on remote attendance options–along with the agenda– here👇🔗

Well, #DETdocumenters it is 10:08 AM and waiting to start…so business as usual (along with my fumbling around, wondering if I’m actually connected to the correct link 😏)

Hey! @detdocumenters.bsky.social, they are calling the meeting to order at 10:10! Sounds like they have a quorum, but Santiago-Romero, Young & Sheffield appear to be absent 🤔

Beautiful (and definitely NOT secular or ecumenical) invocation…personally, I’m down with it, but…wow. I mean, just…wow. Dropping Psalm 91 & ‘Name of Jesus’ like a hammer.

Presentation coming by Councilmember Angela Whitfield Calloway (D-2)…testimonial resolution for Gina Steele Hughes, who sounds pretty amazing…lots of ‘firsts’ in service in firefighting, teaching, investigation and–check it out–2nd career as veterinarian

Following testimonial resolution, she is on hand for a few words followed by a variety of others giving their thanks for her service

It has been noted several times that they have a full house for this meeting and should have held it in the auditorium…unfortunately, can’t really tell how many are in public seating from the video

Now getting back to business…listing all the reports and to committees they are being referred…no unfinished business and moving to public comments. They have 50+ in attendance!

Person from D-3 talking about health issues from what she referred to as “Chronos Cement”…which I suspect is part of Hercules Materials Holding Company👇🔗
herculhttps://herculesconcrete.com/locations

Another person speaks to the silica dust and health issues caused by Kronos, followed by another one…and finally and business owner who has environmental engineering background stating that silica dust can create condition similar to asbestosis

Kronos is here, on Gaylord…👇

And here is a PPT in pdf from Kronos talking about their operations…👇🔗📄

We now have several people speaking regards to wide range of issues, primarily relating to property ownership issues and lack of responsiveness from City

A person now speaks up regarding solar project(s) which he finds disturbing that it is not on agenda…notes size of solar project required square footage is same footprint as that of Kronos facility

Another person alleges that DPD has created new identities (as in new Social Security numbers) for some officers who were previously in prison

Member of public speaks about homeownership, stating various issues of corporate entities buying homes, solar farms project, education levels, etc all overlap and are tied together

Member of public wants those running for mayor to hold debates

Young person has range issues, starting with Kronos down to lack of responsiveness from City

More talk about Kronos…now some discussion of background, how Kronos came to be and importance of zoning classifications…’downzoning’ will be pursued. Definition of ‘downzoning’ here 👇🔗
